چکیده

Fistula from esophagojejunostomy is still one of the most feared complications after total gastrectomy. Despite the development of new surgical devices and techniques, it remains a major concern with an incidence around 5%10. The use of endoscopic stents has brought the possibility of another form of fistula treatment3. However, this technique hasn ́t yet been fully incorporated into clinical practice. This article describes a case of an esophagojejunostomy fistula that was successfully treated with an endoscopic stent. A literature review about this issue also follows.

Subclavian artery-esophageal fistula after placement of a self-expanding metal stent in a patient with esophagogastric anastomosis stenosis

Background: There have been reports on stent-related vascular erosions about patients with benign or malignant stenosis of the esophagus who received endoscopic stent insertion for palliative intention for oral intake. Case presentation: A 61-year-old woman with esophageal cancer located in the middle part of esophagus was treated with esophagectomy. Two years following the surgery, malignan...

Self-Expandable Metal Stent for Closure of a Large Leak after Total Gastrectomy

In recent years, self-expandable metallic stents (SEMSs) have emerged as a promising treatment alternative for the bridging and sealing of esophageal perforations and extensive anastomotic leaks after esophageal resection or total gastrectomy. A 56-year-old woman underwent a total gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y end-to-side esophagojejunostomy for a gastric signet ring cell carcinoma. Ten days later...

Esophagojejunal Anastomosis Fistula, Distal Esophageal Stenosis, and Metalic Stent Migration after Total Gastrectomy

Esophagojejunal anastomosis fistula is the main complication after a total gastrectomy. To avoid a complex procedure on friable inflamed perianastomotic tissues, a coated self-expandable stent is mounted at the site of the anastomotic leak. A complication of stenting procedure is that it might lead to distal esophageal stenosis. However, another frequently encountered complication of stenting i...

Pericarditis: a rare complication of fully covered self-expandable metallic stent in postoperative benign anastomotic stricture.

Benign esophageal strictures are traditionally treated by endoscopic dilation with bougies or balloons [1,2]. Fully covered, self-expandable, metallic stents (SEMS) have been used in the treatment of benign esophageal disease, with the benefits of removability and low incidence of tissue hyperplasia [3]. However, significant complications, such as stent migration, recurrent stricture, or erosio...

Cardiac tamponade occurred after endoscopic submucosal dissection: conservative management of the esophagopericardial fistula

We describe the case of an esophagopericardial fistula generated after endoscopic submucosal dissection in a patient affected by a superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma immediately treated with percutaneous pericardial drainage and placement of a partially covered self-expanding metal stent that has been removed using the stent-in-stent technique after 35 days.
